Buying Guide
Gas Furnace Buying Guide
As you begin shopping for a new furnace, there’s five critical pieces of information that are vital in the decision making process.
Size
The furnace size needs to correctly match the building size for the best performance and efficiency. A furnace that is sized too small will work overtime, driving up your energy costs. A furnace that is too large will produce larger temperature swings.
Heating Stages
Possibly one of the most important choices you’ll have to make when choosing a new furnace has to do with heating stages. There are three options: single-stage, two-stage, and a variable speed. Single-stage furnaces operate at 1 speed, much like a light switch the furnace is either turned on or turned off. Two-stage furnaces operate at high and low speeds for increased efficiency. Variable speed or modulating furnaces, operate the most efficiently because they can ramp up and down in speed in very small increments.
Fuel Source
The three different fuel sources for furnaces include: gas, propane, and electric.
Efficiency
The efficiency of your furnace is a direct link to the energy it consumes to operate. Furnaces range from 80% efficient all the way up to 98%. What does this mean? An 80% AFUE gas furnace, outputs 80 BTUs of useful heat for every 100 BTUs of natural gas it burns.
Noise Level
One of the biggest ways a seemingly trivial toilet can contribute to the overall sustainable ecosystem of a building is by helping it save water.
