Most Common Water Heater Repairs

Electric and gas water heaters have one thing in common, at some point during their lifespan, they will need repairing. Even though they work 24/7 week after week, age, use, and wear and tear will take a toll on the appliance. Below we’ve listed the most common water heater repairs you may experience. (Note: Both electric and gas water heaters share similar repairs. We’ve also listed specific repairs associated with gas units.)

Electric Water Heater Repairs

No Hot Water – Potential symptoms: Broken or malfunctioning heating elements. Incorrect thermostat setting or a faulty thermostat. An interruption of power to the appliance (tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse).

Rust Colored Water – Potential symptoms: The anode rod has failed, rusting the tank. Excessive corrosion on a glass-lined heating tank.

Leaking or Water Puddles – Potential symptoms: Faulty plumbing connections or leaking heating element gasket due to improper tightening. A defective T&P valve is open, overheating, stuck open, or has extreme pressure inside the water tank. The storage tank has excessive corrosion causing failure or rupture.

Water is Too Hot – Potential symptoms: The heating element’s thermostat setting is too high.

Luke Warm Water  – Potential symptoms: Improper plumbing line installation. Wrong size water heater. Faulty dip tube or upper and lower heating element issues.

Rotten Egg Scent – Potential symptoms: Inside the tank is sediment buildup covered with bacteria.

High Pitched Whining Noise – Potential symptoms: Heating elements have an excessive scale buildup.

Popping or Rumbling Sounds – Potential symptoms: Massive amounts of sediment buildup in the tank, causing the bottom to boil and overheat, but not heating the water.

Gas Water Heater Repairs

No Hot Water – Potential symptoms: The pilot light is off, preventing the thermocouple from delivering gas.

Inadequate Amounts of Hot Water – Potential symptoms: Defective or malfunctioning thermostat. Blocked flue or vent or faulty dip tube.

Pilot Light Does Not Light – Potential symptoms: Bad gas valve or defective thermocouple.

Can My Water Heater Be Repaired?

Electric and gas water heaters are repairable by design, provided the issue isn’t too severe. Common repairs often only need a part replaced, the system reset, or the water heater needs inspecting and flushed. Or the pilot light is off on a gas water heater and needs reigniting.

Other times, the repairs are more extensive. For instance, piping didn’t get replaced during a new water heater installation, becoming clogged. Or worse, the water heater was never flushed, causing a massive amount of sediment buildup inside the tank.

With that said, your water heater will reach a point where repairing is no longer an option or too costly. Should that happen, contact Smylie One Heating, Cooling & Plumbing!
