How Do Geothermal Systems Work?
Unlike traditional furnaces that burn fuel to create heat, Geothermal systems instead exchange heat to warm a home. The heat pump process uses the ground or a water source and the air. It can do that quickly because the below-ground temperature is always between 50-60 degrees.
Then the fluid inside a series of buried ground loop pipes absorbs the heat that’s below ground. Once soaked up, it gets cycled over to the heat pump, where the system’s heat exchanger transfers the heat to the air.
When we look at a geothermal cooling operation, it mirrors the same process as an a/c unit or air-source heat pump. The only difference is that instead of releasing heat into the outdoor air, a geothermal heat pump transfers heat into water or underground, dependent on the loop configuration.

The Pros & Cons of Geothermal Systems
───
You require only having an efficient and eco-friendly heating and cooling system. Have you ever considered installing a nontraditional system that surpasses your requirements? If not, or you’re unfamiliar with Geothermal systems, let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons before you decide.
Geothermal System Pros
Eco-Friendly – When you compare carbon footprints between heating and cooling systems, geothermal energy is the smallest. Being a renewable resource, it is not a pollution source.
Efficient – The system uses less energy because it moves heat from one location to another and is not forced to produce new heat. That process dramatically lowers energy costs all year.
Reliable – As a self-sustainable resource, Geothermal energy does not need the weather to operate. That allows the system to function all year, producing heating and cooling.
Durable – Having fewer moving parts and minimal maintenance, this system will last for many years. The indoor equipment can last up to 25 years, and ground loops up to 50 years.
Subtle – As a primarily underground setup, much of the system goes unseen, not disrupting a home’s curb appeal. That eliminates noisy and loud outdoor compressors or fans.
Versatile – Without needing a large area, Geothermal systems are installable in both new construction and existing buildings. It’s the perfect setup for any size home or commercial property.
Safer – Geothermal systems do not need combustion to produce heat, such as burning oil or gas. That eliminates the high risk of deadly gas forming, escaping through the system.
Geothermal System Cons
Setup Cost – Unlike traditional heating and cooling systems, geothermal systems require a more significant upfront investment. To recoup that expense, you’ll have low operating costs.
Water Use – Depending on the water source, there could be issues with the water table if the system were installed to use a well. The workaround is to use a closed-loop system instead.
Electricity Demands – Although geothermal energy is available 24 hours a day, a geothermal system is electrical-dependent. That requires an ongoing supply of electricity to operate.
Limited Resource – Traditional heating and cooling systems dominate the housing and commercial property market. That means very few HVAC companies have experience with geothermal systems.
